An Overview of the album "Who Really Cares" by TV Girl by Addison Wright (Pt. 2/2)
If you're reading this blog, you probably have already read the first one, so I'm just going to jump straight into this one!
1. Cigarettes out the Window
"Cigarettes out the Window" is one of their most popular songs from this album. It has a different feel to it, however. It doesn't have the same "repeating-factor" and dream-like feeling as all of their other songs do in this album. It still has the calm vibe they are known for, still tackling intense topics with harsh words and a calm vibe. This song explores the topic of loneliness because, at this point, the main character has already accepted that the one he loved has left. The sampling in this song is one of my favorites. They took an old Hollywood movie clip while playing the instrumental in the background and it really just encompasses the whole vibes they were going for.
My favorite lyric is:
"She'd disappear for an hour and a half / And when she comes back she'd brush her teeth"
My overall ranking is a 7/10.
2. Not Allowed
I could go on and on about this song! I think this was their first song to get popular and for good reason too. The wordplay and the beat and everything about this song is amazing. I love this song dearly, no matter how many times I listen to it. This song got me through 2021. This song's topic is about how sex isn't "socially acceptable" to talk about and how the main character feels like they don't fit into the "norms". It explains how wants, desires, and needs are okay to pursue.
Some of my favorite lyrics include:
"You don't know how long I could stare at your picture and wish that it was me"
"You should hear when you're not around / When it's just us horny poets / Who can't wait to write it down"
"Do you like these little sonnets / Because I wrote them just for you / Quickly they turn sour / So be careful who you screw"
This song is a lyrical masterpiece, a solid 10/10 for me.
3. (Do The) Act Like You Never Met Me
This song's pettiness is almost comical, how upbeat it is compared to the topic. I'm not crazy about this song, but I have to admit that the idea was great, but the execution was not. This song is very reminiscent of the main character's time with the love interest. There's honestly not much to say about this song because it's a simple idea with an even simpler execution. It's not bad but it's not good either.
The lyrics are the same lyric repeating, so I don't really have any thoughts.
Overall, I would rate this a 4/10.
Hey Addison! I have heard a lot of TV Girl songs on social media but I haven't actually listened to them outside of it. I appreciate the in-depth analysis of the songs in this album! I would say my favorite song that I've heard more commonly is "Not Allowed". Great blog!
