Thanksgiving Break Recs by Addison Wright

While Thanksgiving break isn't for a few weeks, I thought it would be okay to go ahead and give my recommendations in case you want to get the books before the break. Now, these recommendations will be for book series that are on the shorter side since Thanksgiving break is on the shorter side.

BLUE FLAG - KAITO

Blue Flag is definitely one of the longest books on this list, having about 8 volumes (each volume having about 225 pages each). This manga has the tropes of Unrequited Love, Love Triangles, and Childhood Friends. It's about four teenagers who all happen to fall for one another in their friend circle. When they all try to pursue these love interests, they learn that it might not be as easy as they think. When one of the main character's (Taichi) friends (Futaba) approaches him and asks him if he would be willing to help her get with Taichi's childhood best friend (and crush) Toma, he accepts begrudgingly and that's where the story picks up. Honestly, I would rate this book a solid 8/10. It's honestly a perfect read if you are already familiar with manga and enjoy these types of books.

I CANNOT REACH YOU - MIKA

I Cannot Reach You was one of the first mangas I ever read. It has a total of 6 published volumes (the 7th volume coming out in February) and each has 200 pages each. This follows the trope of smart, cool guy that every girl fawns over is best friends with the dumb, nerdy guy. No one understands their friendship besides them. When Kakeru (the nerd) gets a bad grade on a test, he has to stay after class. Later, Yamato (the smart one) comes to walk him home so that they could hang out after school. This causes their friendship to blossom even more. This manga is one of my absolute favorites and I would rate it a 8.5/10. This is a pretty simple book if you wanted to get into reading mangas.

UNTIL I MET MY HUSBAND - RYOUSUKE NANASAKI

Until I Met My Husband is the shortest manga on this list (being only one manga long) and is a beautiful telling about how the author dealt with being a gay man in 1990s Japan. There isn't much to say about this book, but it is a heartwarming read and one I wish I could read for the first time once again. I would honestly rate this book a 7/10.

Comments

  1. Hi Addison! These all sound great! I currently have a vacation planned for Thanksgiving break with a long car ride, so this is perfect. All of these sound great, but seeing as I don't really read manga, I'll probably start with the second one. I used to really like manga, but have since fallen out of touch with the Japanese comics. I'll be sure to borrow some of these from the library before Thanksgiving week.

  2. I've never really gotten into reading manga. Nice recommendations! The second book seems interesting as I'm unfamiliar with manga. I'll see about checking it out.
